Recommendation: Cat Watch

Published by smw1979 at 6:03 am under Uncategorized Edit This

I want to give a shout out to a really neat little magazine that I’ve just started to get to know: Cornell University’s “Cat Watch” newsletter. It comes out every month and covers cat care and health and behavioral issues, and since it’s produced by Cornell, the articles are based on real science, not pseudoscience or anecdotal evidence or so-called common knowledge. I also like that it’s ad-free and unbiased—there are no advertorials singing the praises of XYZ brand cat food.

Because cats are, well, cute and fluffy, it can be hard to find serious information about caring for them, and a lot of the information you find in mainstream publications like Cat Fancy is either superficial, pure fluff, or glowy photos of fussy purebreds, and it also seems to just be the same half dozen subjects addressed over and over. But Cat Watch offers detailed and accessible articles on topics that I don’t read about anywhere else. There have been recent articles on why some cats chew on plastic bags, ototis externa (yeast infection in a cat’s ear canals), caring for cats with chronic illness, leash-training your cat, the warning signs of Cushing’s Disease and acupuncture’s uses in veterinary care, plus lots and lots more.

I absolutely recommend Cat Watch for anybody who is interested in staying educated on cat health and behavior and who wants to offer their cats the best care possible.
